Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer is a devastating, disfiguring, even deadly, cancer that can go unnoticed until it has progressed to later stages. You can take the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health's Risk Assessment Quiz and find out if you at an increased risk for oral cancer. Even if you have no risk factors, you can still develop oral cancer. Twenty-five percent of all oral cancer victims are non-smokers, non-drinkers and have no other lifestyle risk factors. According to a study conducted by Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, the human papillomavirus (HPV) 16, a common sexually transmitted virus, is associated with oral cancers located in the upper throat and back of the tongue.
Dr Oz has even covered this topic on his show to bring awareness to the American public that oral cancer is serious and on the rise. Click the picture on the side to watch Dr Oz's show concerning Oral Cancer.

As with any cancer, early detection is the key to beating it. Dr Sadre performs a visual oral cancer exam biannually. In addition to the visual exam, our office offers two screening tests to help assess your risk for oral cancer as well as detect the early stages of oral cancer. The first screening we offer is the OraRisk HPV test. This salivary diagnostic test that is designed to identify the presence of an oral HPV infection. Once identified, you will know if you are at increased risk for oral cancer. While there is no cure or treatment for HPV, you can make lifestyle changes now to help reduce your risk of oral cancer in the future. The second screening we offer is the Vizilite Oral Cancer Screening. This test is designed to see precancerous and cancerous lesions that are otherwise difficult to see with the naked eye. Dr. Sadre performs this screening in conjunction with your bi-annual visual oral cancer exam. Our office recommends having the Vizilite Oral Cancer Screening performed annually.
